Forming Teams and Moving Teams Forward

Seed grants are small but important investments in research projects and teams at the earliest stages of development. These funds allow researchers to advance their teaming efforts and/or to obtain preliminary data demonstrating the potential viability of the work. Often, seed projects lead to extramural research opportunities and funding.

The Forming Teams and Moving Teams Forward seed grant program is a semi-annual (Spring and Fall) internal funding opportunity designed to support the formation and advancement of cross-disciplinary research teams. Announced by the Office of the Vice President for Research Development and Operations in 2021, the program was developed in response to shifting trends in national research and funding priorities, which have shown an increased focus on supporting large-scale, team-based research projects. These types of projects rely on integrating expertise from across disparate areas, including science, liberal arts, design, and business.

This program offers awards under two different tracks.

  • The Forming Teams track aims to support the formation of new collaborations, with awards in the $10K – $50K range.
  • The Moving Teams Forward track focuses on advancing collaboratives that already exist and offers awards in the $50K – $100K range.

To look for active open calls for proposals, please view the GT Internal Competition website. You can also view a list of award recipients from previous cycles or learn about other Georgia Tech seed grant programs on our Seed Funding Opportunities page.

We anticipate each new call will be announced in InfoReady near July 1 and January 1 annually.
